Our Order

About

The Order of Preachers was established 800 years ago by St. Dominic “for preaching and the salvation of souls.” Following the Rule of St. Augustine and the Constitutions of the Order of Preachers, Dominican friars commit themselves to studyprayer, and preaching in order to be effective instruments of Jesus Christ’s saving mission.

The Order of Preachers is made up of regional provinces throughout the world that carry out the work of evangelization in collaboration with the bishops of the local churches where they serve. The Province of St. Josephfounded in 1805, is one of four provinces in the United States of America, extending from New England to Virginia to Ohio. Our friars engage in a variety of ministries, including serving as teachers, parish priests, hospital chaplains, itinerant preachers, and campus ministers.

In 1963-1969, the Dominican Friars from the Eastern Province of the USA opened and managed St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary in Nairobi, Kenya.  They came back to Kenya in 1985 for the purpose of preaching and establishing the Order in Eastern Africa. We are dedicated to Serving God as preachers, teachers, and pastors, domestic and foreign missionaries.
